What Is a Sewer Belly—and When Does It Actually Need Repair?

Written by Steven Shipler, Texas Licensed Master Plumber, Responsible Master Plumber (RMP), MBA. Texas Master Plumber License #45825.

A sewer belly is a low area in a gravity drainage line where water can collect instead of flowing continuously downhill.

If you have watched a sewer-camera video and suddenly see the camera disappear underwater, that may indicate a low section of pipe—but the presence of water alone does not tell you everything you need to know.

A professional Plano sewer camera inspection should evaluate how much water is present, how long the affected section appears to be, whether debris accumulates there, and what the rest of the line looks like.

A sewer belly is not automatically a reason to replace an entire sewer system.

How Sewer Lines Are Supposed to Work

Most residential sanitary drainage systems depend on gravity. The pipe needs appropriate fall so wastewater and solids can travel toward the building sewer and municipal connection.

If part of the line settles or loses slope, water can remain in that section after the main flow passes.

What Causes a Sewer Belly?

  • Soil settlement
  • Improper bedding beneath the pipe
  • Foundation or soil movement
  • Improper installation
  • Previous excavation
  • Pipe displacement
  • Long-term ground movement
  • Improper repair transitions

How Serious Is the Belly?

Severity matters. A short section holding a small amount of water is a very different condition from a long section where most of the pipe is submerged and solids repeatedly collect.

I have inspected lines where a customer was told that any standing water meant immediate replacement. I do not think that is a good way to evaluate sewer systems. The actual depth, length, history, flow, pipe material, and surrounding conditions matter.

ObservationPossible Significance
Minor shallow waterMay warrant documentation and monitoring.
Long submerged sectionMore significant drainage concern.
Debris repeatedly accumulatingMay contribute to recurring stoppages.
Recurring backups plus bellyMay strengthen the case for repair.

When Does a Sewer Belly Actually Need Repair?

Repair becomes more compelling when the belly is substantial, causes repeated drainage problems, collects solids, is combined with other defects, or prevents reliable use of the sewer system.

The repair decision should not be made from one frozen image. Review the entire video, locate the affected section, consider the depth, evaluate accessibility, and compare the expected benefit of repair with the disruption and cost.

Plano, Allen, and Frisco

Soil movement and settlement can affect underground sewer systems throughout Plano, Allen, and Frisco. Newer PVC systems can develop low areas, and older systems may have a belly combined with corrosion, offsets, or other defects.

Equipment Used

  1. RIDGID SeeSnake: used to document standing water and pipe condition.
  2. RIDGID SeekTech SR-20: used to locate the camera head above ground.
  3. RIDGID ST-305: used to support underground line tracing where appropriate.

5-Star Reviews

★★★★★ Mark Ryan

“Great sewer inspection service. They took the time to properly inspect the entire accessible sewer line instead of rushing through it. The findings were clearly explained, and having a written report from a Master Plumber made it much easier to understand what needed to happen next.”

★★★★★ Brad Miller

“The Sewer Inspection Company did a very thorough inspection and explained what they were seeing throughout the process.”

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is a sewer scope inspection really necessary?

It is the most direct way to visually evaluate accessible interior sewer conditions.

2. How long does a sewer scope inspection take?

Often 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the property.

3. Will I receive a video of the inspection?

Yes.

4. Can a sewer scope detect all problems?

No. Some defects require additional testing or excavation.

5. What happens if problems are found?

The condition is documented and repair or monitoring options can be considered.

6. Is this service included in a standard home inspection?

Do not assume it is.

7. How much can sewer repairs cost?

Costs vary greatly depending on location, depth, access, and scope.

8. Does any standing water mean I have a belly?

Standing water can indicate a low area, but the entire video and pipe conditions should be evaluated.

9. Does every belly need repair?

No.

10. Can a belly cause backups?

A substantial low area can collect debris and contribute to recurring stoppages.

11. Can hydro jetting fix a belly?

No. Jetting can clean debris but cannot change the physical slope of the pipe.

12. Can a belly be under a slab?

Yes.

13. Should a belly be located above ground?

If repair is being considered, locating the affected area can be very useful.

14. Can foundation movement create a belly?

Soil and structural movement can affect underground pipe alignment.

15. Why get a Master Plumber Report?

It provides professional written documentation of the observed condition.
